Opportunity Knocking
/It is true that the more you grow the more you need to say ‘no’ to keep you focused. But it is good to check in with yourself and ask if you are you saying ‘no’ because something doesn’t align with your goals and priorities? Or are you saying ‘no’ because it is not in your comfort zone? What if you are missing an opportunity that could be transformative?
On a recent episode of the Social Change Leaders podcast we interviewed a social entrepreneur, LaPorsche Jymi, who is growing her amazing and impactful business. One of the stories she tells is about how she had attended a local pitch competition despite her lack of desire to go. She was not comfortable public speaking. She wanted to stay home. But, she was a newer business and people in her network encouraged her to go. Well, she went and…...she ended up winning! And, the prize was the use of a pro bono patent attorney. She now has a patent pending on her unique headwear product. (Listen to the full episode here.)
Nearly two years ago I started exercising one (early) morning each week with a small training group. I now do this two mornings per week because it fits into my goal of being strong in mind and body. But, waking up at 5AM is rough. It is especially hard in the winter when it is dark and cold. And recently it was really difficult for me to get up. My daughter had been up a lot at night, I hadn’t had much sleep, I really had to talk myself into going. That day I had a personal record for deadlifting. I almost missed my chance to accomplish this! We don’t do deadlifting all the time, so this truly was special. And I felt proud and strong. That feeling empowered me in other areas of my life too.
